How do I become an IHSS Caregiver/Provider?
The State of California requires all those who are interested in working as an IHSS provider/caregiver to fulfill the following requirements:
Complete the IHSS Orientation & Online Enrollment Process
This is an online process that can be completed via computer, tablet or smart phone.
The IHSS Public Authority can help you complete the steps orientation and enrollment process to eligible IHSS provider. Contact our office to start the process.
Pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) criminal background check
IHSS Provider applicants are required to pay the costs of their background check (Live Scan/fingerprinting services).

If your application to become an IHSS Provider was denied, you may be able to appeal the decision. Follow this link to learn about the appeal process.
Attend an in-person appointment to submit required documents:
Valid government issued identification card
Original Social Security Card
Proof of authorization to work in the US when applicable
Work Permit for minors when applicable
To start the process to become an eligible IHSS caregiver/provider, you must contact our office at (530) 661-2676 to receive orientation and forms required to complete the process.
IHSS Wage
The current Yolo County IHSS Provider hourly wage is $16.25.
IHSS providers who work via our back-up provider programs may receive a $2.00 per hour wage differential. Wage differentials are available only when the IHSS Consumers have available back-up provider hours.
Paid Sick Leave
IHSS Providers may be eligible to receive to receive up-to 24 hours of paid sick leave per fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th). Unused paid leave expires each year, meaning it does not accrue past June 30th of each year. Health Benefits
IHSS Providers who work for Yolo County IHSS Consumers may be eligible to receive medical & vision and/or dental benefits for a monthly copay.
To be eligible providers must meet the minimum working requirement of 80 hours for 3 consecutive months. Enrollments are on a first come, first served basis. There is currently a waitlist for health benefits. Contact our office for information.
Paid Provider Training
Eligible IHSS Providers can participate in free paid training via the IHSS Career Pathways Program. The program provides incentive pay when providers complete training modules.
